Indusry crisis was created by Republicans
The Auto industry is being hit by 4 things caused by the Politicians and their banker supporters

1. $5 gallon gas killed purchases of SUVs and Trucks that the public wanted when gas was $2 gallon. This gas price increase was caused by Bush's Petroleum buddies with the understanding the Administration would protect them from government interference.

2. Extremely tight credit. This made car sales drop and made it hard for the big 3 to get loans to tide them over during the drop in sales. This was also a creation of Bush by his failure to regulate the bankers and his failure to enforce the TARP spending to help homeowners, and loosen credit on main street.

3. Recession. Caused by Bush policies of waste money in Iraq which must be borrowed from China (China demanded their $300 billion investment in Fanny & Freddie be protected which really got the government bailouts started). and failure to regulate the credit market ($340 billion of TARP money spent was ripped off so far)

4. Fair trade laws that force US industry to compete with $1 hour foreign labor.

Now they refuse to help out the Big 3 after they created the problem.

Auto industry is just way behind the times. Thats what is costing the Big three. The unions run those companies.

Serviceman, If are saying behind the times in the terms wages.I dont think theirs " Big 3" actual salaries will be more than toyota Honda or Mercades of america?
Its GM's legacy costs that make the wages seem so far apart. The guy working at gm and toyota bring home close to the same on their paycheck each week. These are american companies that have been here 80 years. In the terms of benefits, There are 33 countries that have health care provided by the goverment including Japan. I would add that Japan funded 100% cost on the battery technology 5 years ago for the Prinis yet as a company they have a market captial in the range of 100 billion which tell you the japan treats business like war.
Lets take a look at subsidies, Please notice Republican Mr Shelby, Alabama he opposes government subsidies when it comes to dealing with the American auto industry. "We don't need government - governmental subsidies for manufacturing in this country "It's the French model, it's the wrong road". We will pay for it. The average American taxpayer is going to pay dearly for this, if I'm not wrong." He does favor subsidies to foreign auto companies though. He had a leading role in attracting a Mercedes Benz SUV plant with a $253 million dollar incentive/subsidy package and he's also proud of the Hyundai SUV plant, Honda SUV plant, and Toyota engine plant that received $400 million in incentives. Those incentives were possible because of the windfall of federal spending that Alabama receives, $1.40 return for every $1.00 sent to Washington. In spite of the presence of automotive facilities in his state, he seems to have a poor grasp of automotive issues." Down below are many more subsidies.

A little more on Mr Shelby

"In 2005, Richard Shelby received a 0 percent on the Republicans for Environmental Protection's ("REP") environmental scorecard.[4] He voted in a manner inconsistent with what the REP considers pro-environment on all 15 issues considered environmentally critical by the REP. Issues in which Senator Shelby voted anti-environment were: all amendments to the Energy Policy Act proposed in 2005, the issue of authorizing drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge, and reducing fuel economy standards for vehicles."

"In 2004, a federal investigation concluded that Shelby revealed classified information to the media when he was a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Specifically, Shelby revealed classified information on June 19, 2002 to Carl Cameron, the chief political correspondent on Fox News. This information had been given to Shelby only minutes before at a closed intelligence committee meeting. This information consisted of two messages intercepted by the National Security Agency on September 10, 2001, but translated only after the attacks the next day — "the match is about to begin" and "tomorrow is zero hour."

"Shelby, in his role as chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, & Urban Affairs, opposed proposed bills that would have helped reform the title insurance industry and help reduce the costs homeowners pay, particularly when they refinance their mortgage.

Shelby earns between $100,000 and $1,000,000 per year from Tuscaloosa Title Co. Inc., a title insurer he founded in 1974. His staff stated that his opposition to the bills is unrelated to his relationship with Tuscaloosa Title."

The guy is a first class dirt bag. Biggest mistake in his life...revealing himself to the American public.
