NFL HANDICAPPING TIP #9 - GAMEPLANS

Today’s NFLX Handicapping Tip is:

Play AGAINST a team that is ignoring its strength to work on a weakness or new offensive scheme.

During exhibition season it’s common for a team with an excellent passing attack to practice their running attack. Likewise, last year’s excellent running teams are likely to be doing a lot of passing. Implementing a new offense will also take precedence over getting a win, even for coaches that don’t like to lose.

PRO INFO SPORTS saw such an opportunity last year when we made Tampa Bay a 2 STAR SELECTION as a 2’-point underdog at Tennessee. In our analysis, we wrote:

“Despite Jeff Fisher’s preseason success over the past couple of year, they figure to have their hands full with the Bucs…Norm Chow’s offensive system will get unveiled here, but it certainly can’t be expected to be executed perfectly first time out, and simply working on it is the ultimate goal, rather than chalking up a victory. ‘You have a hard time measuring where you are until you get into the pre-season games,’ Jeff Fisher said. ‘This is going to give us an indication of where we are. As we go into the first week, even though we have quite a bit of offense in, we’re only going to use a little bit, so we’re looking for execution and a minimal amount of mistakes and those types of things.’…The Titans don’t figure to pile up the points while testing a new offense against a stiff Bucs’ ‘D’.”

Indeed, the Titans could put only 17 points in the board, including overtime, as the Buccaneers prevailed, 20-17. Preseason is the time work on new schemes. There is also little logic in a coach going over and over his team’s strongest plays while ignoring its weaknesses.
