Are these games not more rigged now than ever before?

I have been a sports junkie since about 1979 when I watched my first World Series with my dad. Soon after that I learned what a point spread was. My dad and uncle were bookies and since I was the only one of three boys who took a liking to sports and gambling, my dad let me tally profit/loss in those old style black and white gambling booklets every single week. I was hooked at a young age. In the 90s I found VIPsports.com and started gambling online. At that time, the old CNN ticker on TV was the best way to find scores. Then in the early 2000s, around the time I found OSB, I found another gambling site that I liked called SportingbetUSA.com. Those sites used to give me 100% deposit bonus every time. All my deposits were through Western Union and I’d send cash to a guy named something like Manuel Rodriguez in a place like Managua, Nicaragua. It would be in my account within a hour of being sent. They covered my W/U fees too. It was great fun and I was able to make some cash. Once, I cancelled a withdrawal for $2,500 (gambled it away) but still received the check in the mail and when I phoned VIPsports management about it, they told me to keep it. Do you think anything like that could ever happen today at Fan Duel or DraftKings? ZERO percent chance.

So anyway, for at least 25 years I’ve thought college sports were the most beatable or least likely to be rigged because there are so many more games. MLB was challenging but beatable in my opinion if you put the time in and studied umpires, kept up with the umpire rotations and tracked the lines and totals. It was basically a full time job. Umps used to call games fairly consistently. At least the games I bet on had umps that did. Statfox was my go to and sometimes I’d go back years to chart an umpire’s record. Flamethrowers/finesse nitpickers, home/away favorites and underdogs could all be relevant. Today it’s as if none of that matters anymore and it’s just a big money grab. If you’re not super sharp and dedicate a lot of time to gain any kind of edge, you might as well be playing craps. Today’s umps are like politicians. They can be bought easily. I have never seen so many clear strikes called balls and vice versa. It’s a sham. Old school umpires have been filtered out. They’re only promoting pieces of shit to the big leagues from what I gather. Furthermore I suspect there is a whole undercover draft process for these spineless idiots.

In Virginia, unless I use an offshore book I can’t bet on Virginia college teams in anything. Not even a futures bet. We’re wasting time forming opinions on local sports. How flipping ridiculous is that?

I have been having better luck betting golf the past couple years. It’s mostly fair with alternating tee times the first two days of a tourney. The best part about it is NO REFS butting in every five seconds to determine an outcome. These players are all hungry. I kinda wish I paid more attention to Tennis.

I’ve had it with ALL the pro sports leagues. Crazy amounts of juice, crooked refs, tv broadcasts always mentioning the live lines…Charles Barkley pimping ads for Fan Duel every chance he gets, next it’ll be Peyton Manning or another big name sellout. Right?

Ok rant over….I still appreciate this site and checking in on a semi-regular basis to get a play or two. Lol!

How’s this for a pitch…..Ive always wanted to give Vegas a shot and try to get rich quick. Been there a few times with smaller bankrolls and introduced myself to a couple Sportsbook managers but didn’t really get to know any of them. I’d like to bet $50k my first game in town or maybe $100k when I’m ready. But I want to get a sportsbook to take my cash and accept that first bet without looking at the side until the day is over. The cash is handed over. The bet is placed in a briefcase and watched by security (and myself) ….If they win they keep my cash. If I win I get paid. Anyone think that be done or do they NEED to adjust spreads (aka call in the fix to some crooked ref waiting in a blue tent?

I’ve noticed the same things with umpire strike zones, especially late innings when game tied. Too much money out there on some of these games for Vegas NOT to have their hand in at least some of them. I think NHL might be the least likely to be influenced, although refs still playing a huge part with so many replays, penalties, goals being called back etc.

Anyways, as far as betting that amount of money, maybe another suggestion would be to place multiple $9500 wagers at different books? That way you aren’t drawing attention, moving lines, and best part no taxes! Either way good luck! The under in panthers canes keeps cashing, riding that one until it breaks!

I made a lot of those Western Union transfers to Managua and Panama City, to names like "Isabel Gonzalez" and "Jose Martinez" back in the day. More than I care to admit. It got to the point where the currency exchange manager would see me walking toward the door and have the forms out and ready for me to fill out, so I could send my hard-earned $250 (with the transfer fee credited, of course) and blow it on some ill-advised side and total parlay.

That said, I miss the old days, when Al Michaels or Lee Corso would make the occasional sly gambling reference, like "and now, this game is officially OVER" and "this play means a lot to some people." Now, the gambling site commercials are everywhere, ESPN is running spreads and totals on its ticker, sporting events give the live lines during commercial breaks, and everyone is using their credit card to fund their account so they too can hit the miracle six-figure parlay.

I have been betting sports for 25 years, and I have never denied how addictive and dangerous this activity can be. To me, the current pervasiveness of sports gambling is a lot like recreational marijuana use. Everywhere I go--the mall, the grocery store--I smell skunk weed, and while it's largely legal now in most jurisdictions, I'm not sure how great it is for people to be smoking high-powered marijuana every day.
